Why does the UK love the classic rotary mower?

When it comes to lawnmowing everyone has their preference in machine. Some swear by their electric mower whilst others will not change from petrol. Some gardeners prefer a hover machine whereas others cannot see past the classic rotary lawnmower.

One thing is for sure, when Karl Dahlman invented the ‘Flymo’ in 1964 it changed the way we mow the lawn forever. Its unique design and advanced manner of operation, floating on a cushion of air meant that for its time it was simply revolutionary. And yet despite the hover mowers ground breaking introduction to the gardening world it did by no means mean the end of the classic rotary lawnmower.

Visimo
Here we are, in the year 2015, with a range of Flymo rotary lawnmowers available to suit a number of different lawns at affordable prices. We have learned since the inception of the Flymo, that Brits still love the classic rotary lawnmower, and here we offer two key reasons as to why:

Stripes!

Stripes, stripes and more stripes, we cannot escape them in Britain. When we picture a garden, many of us see flowerbeds, a pathway, garden gate and a freshly cut lawn with luscious stripes. Perhaps we consciously or subconsciously favour stripes because of Britain’s sporting history.

From Wembley stadium, and centre court at Wimbledon to lush bowling greens in towns and villages, some of Britain’s biggest (and indeed smallest) sporting events are played out on freshly cut, striped grass. It can be argued that it is the turf that is the most looked after and sought after in Britain, meaning a wheeled rotary lawnmower with a rear roller is essential to come close to replicating it. Perhaps this alone is the number one reason, the classic rotary lawnmower sells so well in the UK and has continued to do so over the years.

Traditional Thinking

Traditional thinking is another factor as to why us Brits love the rotary lawnmower. We’re stubborn in our ways and surprisingly, many UK gardeners are yet to try a hover mower. Without trying a hover machine it can be difficult to understand the benefits and thus, Brits stick to what they know in the form of a wheeled lawnmower.

Perhaps one of Flymo’s Chevron machines has done the trick perfectly for you in the past and as such there is no need for a change, however you may be missing out on a different mower that’s perfect for your lawn. Take a look at the Flymo UltraGlide for example, it is the most innovative hover machine from Flymo because of its unique DuoTech system, allowing it to cut up to walls, fences and over edges without losing performance. Or the Flymo Robotic Lawnmower 1200 R, a mower which cuts the grass on its own, day or night, without supervision. If you’re looking for a new lawnmower this summer, perhaps now could be the time to try something different?
