National Gardening Week

National Gardening Week (10-16 April) is officially here, meaning it’s the perfect time to start prepping and tidying to get your outdoor space ready ahead of the Easter Bank Holiday.

Whether you’re reluctantly dusting off your lawnmower and tools for the first cut of the year or you’re a gardening maven gearing up for a weekend of alfresco fun, Flymo, the UK’s number one lawnmower brand, has shared some handy tips and tricks to help you achieve a flawless finish:

A Pre-cut Tidy Up

After months of being starved of sunshine your garden may look a little neglected. It’s important before your lawn’s first cut of the year to take time to clear any mess including dead sticks, leaves and any rubbish that may have gathered. A quick and simple way is to arm yourself with the Flymo GardenVac 2700. The 4-in-1 electric vacuum collects unwanted leaves and garden debris, with a shredding option – allowing you to simply empty the contents directly onto you compost heap. It also has a Jet Vac function for those stubborn wet leaves.

The One Third Rule

When cutting your lawn you should always follow the one third rule: never cut more than a third of the blade of grass in one go, as cutting more than this can stress the grass. You should gradually reduce the grass length over a number of weeks to reach the desired length. Cutting the grass too short, too fast is known as ‘scalping’ which can lead to disease and weed infestation.

Mow the Lawn

Many people find mowing the lawn a chore, research from the gardening brand shows that 45% of men and 46% of woman would rather have someone or something take care of it for them. The once time consuming and labouring task is now a thing of the past thanks to Flymo’s Robotic Lawnmower 1200R which needs no human intervention and the lightweight, easy-to-use, cordless mower the Mighti-Mo 300 Li.

Contour Your Garden

Don’t forget about the edges when cutting your lawn for the first time. Overgrown edges can look unsightly and can mean time and effort spent working in the garden has been in vain. The Flymo Contour Cordless XT makes trimming the borders a quick and easy task as the battery-powered device ensures tangled cables and extension leads are a thing of the past, borders are neat, tidy and most importantly straight.

Time for a Trim

Tackle any unsightly and overgrown hedges and bushes as it will make a real impact on how your garden looks overall. The majority of domestic homes in the UK tend to opt for the formal hedge which is a straight edge. For this, try Flymo EasiCut 610XT which allows you trim more foliage and taller hedges in one movement, while leaving a neater finish. For those feeling creative, try a cordless hedge trimmer to give you the freedom to get started, map out your design and power up Flymo’s EasiCut Cordless 420.

Quick and Easy Tips

  • To create a perfectly straight sided leafy hedge around your garden, set up a string line between poles to follow with your hedge cutters.
  • When trimming your hedges, ensure you remove any excess foliage that may collect at the bottom of the hedge as the damp airless, conditions can cause fungal diseases.
  • Avoid watering your lawn immediately after mowing. The best time to give your lawn a hose down is the first thing in the morning as the air is cool and the water can travel to the roots before drying up.
